Working under Quarantine

Wow. What strange times we are living in. I’ve been out of work for a couple of months now, which has given me lots of time to work on my own stuff.

First of all let me talk about the progress of my animation. During lockdown I have been working hard and have now completed all EIGHT character turnarounds and this is third iteration of them with a couple of additional characters being added since I reworked the script.

This are the main characters. Benjii the Koala, Leonard the Frog, Debby the Panda and Roy the tortoise.

I’ve learnt so much since I did the first and second character designs years ago and I felt it was important to give the characters one more rework and this time it’s final! This first ones were too ‘lanky’ and not really animation friendly. The second ones went int he completely other direction and felt too ‘pre-school’. These are a nice balance while still keeping them simple.

This are the rest of the characters with the addition of the new members ‘Flakesworth the Owl’ and ‘Rendel the Beetle’. I simplified Derek Winterbottom and gave him some crocs and a wee hat.

After concept comes rigging before I can animate them. Benjii has been the first to be rigged and becasue I’ve done quite a bit of rigging before in Toon Boom I am getting more familiar with the processes and will be ready to rig the rest soon. I also have to figure out what the backgrounds are going to look like so will be having a play around with that.

I have been doing all this on stream where people can watch me work and chat at the same time but I’m not quite ready to announce the channel just yet. Speaking of the stream though I have animated a ‘channel pet’ that sits in the corner of the screen. His name is Geral and he is a CHONK penguin. Say hi.

I’m going to be doing lot’s of animation on Toonboom in the near future so this was a nice practice session.

Well, that’s pretty much it for now. Take care of yourselves and I will see you next time.
